Touisset Point Wins Inaugural Walsh Cup Team Races
A Brief History of The Walsh Cup
In the mid 1940’s, the Walsh Family of Willow Road Nahant established a trophy to encourage Team Racing between the Nahant and Marblehead Town Class Fleets. The trophy is inscribed, “Town Class, Team Race, Nahant vs. Marblehead, but it is known as the Walsh Cup. The Walsh Family raced Townies as members of the Nahant Dory Club, and regularly participated in Marblehead Race Week,
The races were always held in Nahant, as Nahant sailors went to Marblehead for Race Week. The format was a two race series, held on a Sunday, with an equal number of boats from each fleet scoring. This was necessary because in most cases Marblehead had more Townies racing than Nahant. Everyone could compete, but only an equal number from each fleet would count towards the final score. Over the period 1947 to 1969 the races were held 18 times with Marblehead winning 15 out of 18 times.
After 1969 the races lapsed until this year. With the approval of the Nahant Dory Club’s Council, the “Deed” was changed to include teams from all fleets, and would be held in conjunction with the Town Class National Championships, when hosted by the Nahant Dory Club. Team Racing will be part of future Town Class National Championships when hosted by the Nahant Dory Club. Please note that the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court was not asked to change the DEED, as was the case for that “OTHER” Cup.
This year’s inaugural races were held with teams from Nahant, Marblehead and Touisset Point, RI. In the first race Touisset Point took a commanding lead placing its top 4 boats in second, third, fourth and fifth for a total of 14 points. Nahant followed with 30 points resulting from a first, seventh, tenth and twelfth. Marblehead was next with 34 points from a sixth, eighth, ninth and eleventh place. The day’s second race found Nahant winning it with 23 points with finishes of another first, a fourth, a seventh and an eleventh. Touisset was next with 26 points from a third, sixth, eighth, and ninth. Marblehead was close behind with 29 points from a second, fifth, tenth and twelfth.
In the end, Touisset Point prevailed with 40 points to Nahant’s 53 and Marblehead’s 63.
A good time was had, and everyone looks forward to the different races which Touisset Point will hold next year before the Nationals, and Marblehead will hold the following year when it hosts the Nationals in 2005.
